I agree about pursuing nuclear energy and pulling back on renewables, but continuing to produce ethanol as an oxygenation agent is worthwhile. Not only is it better than MTBE but it provides some return from crops that are damaged by pests or weather.

Biofuel research should continue… a breakthrough is still possible. Even if baseline power were all nuclear, there are so many different paths to investigate for vehicle use. Even the IEEE, the electrical engineering professional society, does not support California’s drive to replace the entire fleet of cars and trucks with EVs. My perception is that payoffs from cronies is the primary driver of California’s climate change policy. If it does not lead to significant “campaign contributions” to the ruling party, it is “bad for the Earth”. If the money for such contributions came from taxes diverted to the donors, those are kickbacks and should be prosecuted under RICO.
